Gula’s Nonsense: Red Herrings, Straw Men and Sacred Cows: How We Abuse Logic in Our Everyday Language. Right now I am about halfway through the book. I can already say that it is definitely worth reading for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of the tactics politicians use to try to deceive the public. Of course if isn’t only politicians who want your vote, but anyone who wants anything from you. Every day you have people trying to convince you to support this cause, to buy this product, or to side with this or that group. You have to be careful with listening to anyone who solicits you for your vote, your money, or your support. With so many people trying to convince you of something, how can you know what to believe? Analyze the logic they use to determine what, if any, fallacies are present in their argument. After all, that is what is really taking place, an argument between them and your better judgment.

One simple example is how Obama is telling you to vote for him on the basis that hope and change will bring about a better America. He is misleading the voters into thinking a contributory cause is a sufficient cause. Simply put, he is having us believe that hope and change WILL cause a better America, when in fact it MAY, but it also may not. He then uses these magic monosyllabic words that everyone understands to symbolize a better country. He is taking advantage of the short attention span most voters in this country have and oversimplifying (another logical fallacy in the book) the nation’s solution in two words. Everyone can relate to these two words. His campaign has about the same density as the latest miracle diet, and all the craze to go along with it. It is simplistic and has all the answers; does this sound like an infomercial to you? Everyone jump on the bandwagon before you are accused of being too ignorant to see something so simple! I mean after all, wouldn’t you rather be safely wrong along with millions of others than be right with the criticized minority…even if it was at the cost of another 4 years of at best, inadequacy?

This is a good read and introduction to logic and the fallacies we see used everyday. As it says in the first line of the book, “It’s frustrating to know in your heart that what you’ve just heard is nonsense but not to be able to pinpoint why it is nonsense.” Take a look at this book and that frustration will ease after every page read as you distinguish sound logic from nonsense.

NOTE: This book is also great for understanding arguments that take place in your daily life. The next time you get into a argument with someone you will find yourself calling them out every time they try to abuse logic to persuade you to their way of thinking. I would absolutely recommend reading this book before watching the presidential debates.
